winter citrus salad welcomes the new year

January resolutions include more salads in my diet. Citrus fruit brightens up a salad in the cold season and this winter citrus salad combo of oranges, grapefruits, pomegranates and avocados satisfies my yearning for crisp greens, tangy and sweet fruit with a lemon poppy seed dressing that marries all the flavors well. I think you could describe this festive looking dish as a party on a plate.

Serves: Serves 4


  • 4 cups mixed greens
  • 1 orange, sliced into sections
  • 1 pink grapefruit, sliced into sections
  • 1 white grapefruit, sliced into sections
  • 1 avocado, peeled and sliced
  • ¼ cup pomegranate seeds
  • ¼ cup pine nuts, toasted
  • lemon poppy seed dressing:
  • ½ cup olive or vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds



Chill 4 salad plates in the refrigerator.


In salad dressing jar or bowl prepare the dressing by combining the oil and lemon juice.


Add the honey, mustard, salt and poppy seeds. Mix well to combine.


Just before serving, divide the greens amongst the 4 salad plates.


Divide the citrus fruit sections and avocado slices over the greens. Top with pomegranate seeds and pines nuts.


Drizzle the dressing over the arranged salads and serve immediately.
